The italic family of languages comes from an ancient history in Italic. It evolved over the years from several different languages in the region until one particular language, Latin, was used more as an official language. It became the official language of the Roman Empire. Eventually, the vulgar Latin that was used in different regions developed with influence from surrounding languages. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the use of Latin aside from scientific, legal, medical, and liturgical fields eventually dissolved. The vulgar Latin languages that were spoken in the different areas developed further and became the official languages of the regions. These languages exist today as the modern Romance languages.

- marginally inflecting (except for Latin)
- present, past, and future tenses
