An Introduction to the Language

Yiddish is a Germanic deriving from Middle High German. Early in its existence it was basically the same as the German from which it derived but words from Hebrew and Aramaic were introduced to express Jewish ideas and customs. It began to diverge enough that it became a language in it's own right. It is written in a modified form of the Hebrew script, which, unlike Hebrew, is written with vowels and is a true alphabet.
