An Introduction to the Language
Welsh is a member of the Brythonic branch of the Celtic languages. Officially, the English and Welsh languages have equal status in Wales. In December 2010, the Welsh Assembly unanimously approved legislation to make Welsh an official language in Wales, and additional measures to promote the language.
History
Welsh emerged in the 6th century from British, the common ancestor of Welsh, Breton, Cornish, and the extinct language known as Cumbric. Like most languages, there are identifiable periods within the history of Welsh, although the boundaries between these are often indistinct.
