Alphabet
Below is the Veroese alphabet which comprises of 31 individual letters. 13 of which are vowels, and 18 of which are consonants.
The alphabet is arranged like this to include the long versions after the short versions of the vowels while the vowels that do not differentiate come at the end. Veroese, compared to other continental Scandinavian languages, is missing the letters c and y.

Vowels
The Veroese vowels are effectively split into two groups. The front vowels and the rest. The front vowels are done so because they invoke the softening of velar plosives (k and g). The front vowels will be marked below in blue.
| Short | a | e | i | o | u | å | æ | ö |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| /a/ | /ə/ | /ɪ/ | /ʊ/ | /ʉ/ | /ɔ/ | /e/ | /ø/ | |
| Long | á | é | í | ó | ú | å | æ | ö |
| /ɑ/ | /e/ | /i/ | /u/ | /y/ | /o/ | /æ/ | /ø/ |
Softening
Before the front vowels é i í ú and ö:
- <k> morphs from /k/ to /ɕ/
- <g> morphs from /g/ to /j/
G Lengthening
When the letter g follows a vowel at the end of a word, the g, the previous vowel pretends it has been lengthened although is short.
To illustrate:
- tí would be /ti:/
- tig would be /ti/
but
- ti would be /tɪ/
If the g follows a long vowel anyway, the g is not pronounced:
- tíg would be /ti:/
J Diphthongisation
The letter j can appear after some vowels to form a diphthong. In such case, the j becomes /ɪ/.
So:
- poj would be /pʊɪ/
- paj would be /paɪ/
- pej would be /pəɪ/
- péj would be /peɪ/
- påj would be /poɪ/
etc.
