Vowel Harmony

Unlike Estonian, but like most other Finno-Ugric languages, Võro has vowel harmony. This is a system where a single word (or root word) cannot contain a mix between front and back vowels.

Võro has the following vowels.

Front Back
Unrounded Rounded Unrounded Rounded
Close i y ɨ u
Mid e ø ɤ o
Open æ ɑ

These are organised into the table like this.

Front Ä Ö Ü E I
Back A O U Õ I

Notes:

  • The above table basically means that words cannot contain a mix of letters from the same row as each other.
  • For example, the Estonian word külla becomes küllä in Võro. The letter in the first row can be replaced by the letter in the second row directly above
  • When you add a case ending in Võro, some of them have to agree. So külä becomes küläldäq but hammastõ becomes hammastõldaq .
