An Introduction to the Language
Tok Pisin is a creole language spoken throughout Papua New Guinea; in parts of Western, Gulf, Central, Oro Province and Milne Bay Provinces the use of Tok Pisin has a shorter history, and is less universal, especially among older people. It is an official language of Papua New Guinea and the most widely used language in that country.
History
Tok Pisin developed from a pidgin based mostly on English, but also on German, Portuguese, and Austronesian languages to act as a lingua franca facilitating communication between members of the very heterogeneous populations of Papua New Guinea. It eventually became an independent language of its own and is not considered a pidgin anymore.
