An Introduction to the Language
History
Swedish is a Northern Germanic language spoken as an official language in Sweden and Finland. Until July 2009, the only country with Swedish as their official language was Finland. Sweden had had votes in the past to instate it as their official language, however the majority narrowly voted against such a proposal until 2009. Until 2009 Swedish served as a de facto language for Sweden.
Swedish developed from an eastern dialect of Old Norse. Over the past several hundred years, Swedish has undergone many reforms including the removal of their case system and also verb forms such as the subjunctive and plural endings of verbs. Swedish has been heavily influenced over the years by languages like English, French, Low German and Finnish.
