An Introduction to the Language
History
Romanian is one of the smaller members of the romance family. Romanian has had a lot of contact with the Slavic languages, and thus contains a lot Slavic influence. There are also lesser influences from German, Hungarian, Greek and Turkish. In modern times Romanian has been influenced a lot by French and Italian, and also by other international languages like English. Romanian has a lexical similarity with Italian estimated at 77%, followed by French at 75%, Sardinian 74%, Catalan 73%, Spanish 71%, Portuguese, and Rhaeto-Romance at 72%.
