Infinitive

The infinitive form of the portuguese verbs is important because by seeing it you can identify to which group of verbs a certain verb belongs. The infinite verbs in portuguese can have three endings: -ar(First conjugation), -er(Second conjugation)1 and -ir(Third conjugation).

English Portuguese
to walk andar
to sell vender
to smile sorrir
  • 1 The irregular verb "pôr", which means "to put", belongs to the second conjugation (the verbs ending in -er) because of its ancient form "poer" (ponere from Latin).
