An Introduction to the Language
Japanese is one of the largest languages in existence as well as, arguably, one of the hardest to learn to read. The Japanese language's origins are not exactly known, but we do know that it's writing system was heavily influenced by Chinese. As a result, after many reforms and many alterations to the Chinese Hanzi script, Japanese came out with three scripts - hence why it is considered a very difficult language to learn to read.
Okinawan is a member of the Ryukyuan subgroup of Japonic languages. It is believed that the Ryukyuan languages diverged from Japanese just before there was a record of writing in Japanese. There is some controversy as to whether the Ryukyuan languages are actually separate languages or merely dialects. In either case, these languages are mutually unintelligible with one another and with standard Japanese.
