An Introduction to the Language
Mirandese is a Romance language belonging to the Astur-Leonese branch, spoken in a small area of northeastern Portugal. Today it is a seriously endangered language, having fewer than 5,000 native speakers. The Portuguese government granted it co-official recognition and special protection status.
History
The Mirandese language has been distinct since the 12th century and it's closely related to the other Astur-Leonese languages, Asturian and Leonese. While Mirandese suffered heavy influences from Portuguese, the Asturian and Leonese languages were influenced by Spanish.
