Personal Pronouns
Māori personal pronouns are organised into three main groups: singular, dual (two people), plural (more than two). Also, inclusive and exclusive differentiations are made in Māori.
| Singular | Dual | Plural | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inclusive | Exclusive | Inclusive | Exclusive | ||
| 1st person | Ahau / Au | Tāua | Māua | Tātou | Mātou |
| 2nd person | Koe | Korua | Koutou | ||
| 3rd person | Ia | Rāua | Rātou | ||
Demonstrative Pronouns
The demonstrative pronouns are things that specify "this", "that", "those" etc. The table below shows the Māori demonstrative pronouns
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| Proximal | tēnei | ēnei |
| Medial | tēnā | ēnā |
| Distal | tērā | ērā |
- The proximal is used for things close to the speaker.
- The medial is used for things close to the listener.
- The distal is used for things removed from both.
Examples:
- He pukapuka tēnei. This is a book
He pai ngā kuri ēnā ki au. I like those dogs. This needs to be checked
He tõku kura tērā. That (over there) is my school.This needs to be checked
You will notice the demonstrative pronouns go after the noun they describe, not before. So, pukapuka tēnei, not tēnei pukapuka.
