An Introduction to the Language

History

Māori was not given official status in New Zealand until 1987, when the Māori Language Act was passed. However, since the 1860s Māori has been a minority language, and in the 1880s it was forbidden to use Māori in schools. It was not until the 1980s that people began to realise that the language was in danger of extinction, and programs to revitalize the language were put in place. However Māori is still an endangered language, with only about 4 percent of the New Zealand population able to converse in it.
