An Introduction to the Language
The Malayalam language is one of the Dravidian languages of southern India and is one of the 22 official languages of India. It is the only one of the Dravidian languages that has no diglossia, that is, the written form is the same as the spoken form. The script is based on a script that was used for writing Sanskrit that evolved from the ancient Brahmi script. Malayalam's closest relative is Tamil whose script is also based on the same script as Malayalam's script. As a Dravidian language, it is agglutinating in nature and this is reflected in the writing as well.
