An Introduction to the Language
Karelian is a group of dialects of a Finnic language that is closely related, but not mutually intelligible with Finnish. There are a number of differences between Karelian and the standard Finnish used in Finland. There are a number of modern 19th and 20th century influences seen in Finnish that are not part of Karelian. There have been recent attempts by the Karelian government to decide upon a standard form, but at this point writers simply use their own regional form.
