Since Japanese has a myriad of different expressions for time, both Native to Japanese and Sino-Japanese, I thought it deserved its own section so that you can look over the information all in one place.

Time relative to now

First of all, Japanese has a number of expressions that are used to indicate things like this month, tomorrow, the day before yesterday, etc. They go both by length of time and number of units away from the present. This means that you can have up to two in either direction such as the day after tomorrow.

Time relative to now
Units -2 -1 0 1 2
Days 漢字 一昨日 昨日 今日 明日 明後日
Days NJ おとといototoi きのうkinou きょうkyou あした/あすashita/asu あさってasatte
Days SJ いっさくじつissakujitsu さくじつsakujitsu こんじつ/こんにちkonjitsu/konnichi みょうにちmyounichi みょうごにちmyougonichi
Months 漢字 先々月 先月 今月 来月 再来月
Months SJ せんせんげつsensengetsu せんげつsengetsu こんげつkongetsu らいげつraigetsu さらいげつsaraigetsu
Years 漢字 一昨年 去年/昨年 今年 来年 再来年
Years NJ おととしototoshi ことしkotoshi
Years SJ いっさくねんissakunen きょねん/さくねんkyonen/sakunen こんねんkonnen らいねんrainen さらいねんsarainen
  • Note that weeks shuu work the same as the months.
  • Apparently there's also a 一昨昨日sakiototoi for 3 days back, but I don't know if this applies to the others as well

Months

Months in Japanese use a special symbol that resembles a small katakana ke (although it's pronounced ka) to distinguish between whether you're saying which month it is, or how many months' worth of time has gone by.

  • When you're referring to the month itself, you simply follow the number by gatsu
  • When you're referring to the number of months, you follow the number by kagetsu

Examples:

来月は二月だね。raigetsu wa nigatsu da ne? Next month is February isn't it?
ここに二ヶ月泊まっています。koko ni nikagetsu tomatte imasu. I've been staying here for two months.
