The prepositions – Na réamhfhócail
Some prepositions in the Irish language are conjugated with the personal pronouns and as these are very frequent it is vital to learn the conjugations as e.g faoi mé would be incorrect and not understood, as the form in this example would be fúm. As there is no verb that translates with have bí + ag and ar are used in Irish.
The conjugations follow the structure: mé tú é í sinn sibh iad
- ag, with agam agat aige aici againn agaibh acu
- ar, on orm ort air uirthi orainn oraibh orthu
- as, from asam asat as aisti asainn asaibh astu
- chuig, to chugam chugat chuige chuici chugainn chugaibh chucu
- do, to díom díot de de dínn díbh díobh
- faoi, under fúm fút faoi fúithi fúinn fúibh fúthu
- i, in ionam ionat ann inti ionainn ionaibh iontu
- idir, between idir mé / eadram idir tú / eadrat idir é idir í / eidirthi eadrainn eadraibh eadrathu
- le, with liom leat leis léi linn libh leo
- ó, from uaim uait uaidh uaithi uainn uaibh uathu
- roimh, before romham romhat roimhe roimpi romhainn romhaibh rompu
- thar, above tharam tharat thairis thairsti tharainn tharaibh tharstu
- trí, through tríom tríot tríd tríthi trínn tríbh tríothu
- um, around, about umam umat uime uimpi umainn umaibh umpu
- fara, next to faram farat fairis farae farainn faraibh faru
- ionsar, toward ionsorm ionsort ionsair ionsuirthi ionsorainn ionsoraibh ionsorthu
- seach, past seacham seachat seacha seichi seachainn seachaibh seachu
There are, however, some prepositions that don‘t conjugate with personal pronouns, these are
- go (E with article) with
- gan (+, but not in front of d, t, s, f, names or if the word has an article) without
- mar (E if article) as
- os (only used with os comhair, os coinne = across, os ard = loud, open, public, os
- íseal = with a soft voice, in secret, and os meán = off the scale over
- seachas except
- is (always with the article an!) until
- a (only in front of verbal nouns!, lenition without article) to
- dar (in interjections!) by
- go dtí to
The following prepositions requires genitive;
- chun to, e.g. chun buachalla to a boy
- trasna through, across, over, e.g. trasna na habhann across the river
- timpeall around, about, e.g. timpeall an tí around the house
- fearacht like, e.g. fearacht an fhir sin – like that man there
- tar éis after, e.g. a céathru tar éis a dó – quarter past two
- cois beside, at the foot of, cois abhainn – beside the river
- tigh at, tigh Shéain – at John‘s place
