Inuktitut distinguishes not just plural, but dual and plural. There are personal endings for dual and plural (see the verbs page) as well as endings for nouns themselves.

Contents

Dual endings

Dual endings change their form depending on the final consonant.

Vowel endings

If a word ends in a vowel, double the vowel and add k.
Examples:

ᓄᕗᔭ - nuvuja - cloud
ᓄᕗᔭ˙ᒃ - nuvujaak - two clouds

T endings

If a word ends in a t, add iik.
Examples:

ᐅᖃ˙ᓚᐅᑦ - uqaalaut - telephone
ᐅᖃ˙ᓚᐅᑎ˙ᒃ - uqaalautiik - two telephones

Other endings

If a word ends in any other consonant, drop the last consonant, double the last vowel and add k.
Examples:

ᓇᓴ - nasaq - hat
ᓇᓴ˙ᒃ - nasaak - two hats

Plural endings

Plural endings also change their form depending on the final consonant.

Vowel endings

If a word ends in a vowel, add it.
Examples:

ᓄᕗᔭ - nuvuja - cloud
ᓄᕗᔭᐃᑦ - nuvujait - clouds

T endings

If a word ends in t, add iit.
Examples:

ᐅᖃ˙ᓚᐅᑦ - uqaalaut - telephone
ᐅᖃ˙ᓚᐅᑎ˙ᑦ - uqaalautiit - telephones

Other endings

If a word ends in any other consonant, drop the last consonant and add it.
Examples:
