Articles

Articles come directly before the noun or any adjectives modifing it. Its purpose is to show whether a noun is definite or indefinite, loosly whether there is a specific object being spoken about or just objects in the abstract.

Definite Article

The definite article (the) in Hungarian is az. However, over time, poets and authros began to (for aesthetic reasons) drop the z before a word begining with a consonant and spelled it a' . Today however, this has become a rule, and the z must be dropped before a following consonant. This gives hungarian two definite artciles: az and a.

The definite article is used roughly like in English except that like German, Hebrew, French and many more languages, often when English would leave a noun sitting all by itself, Hungarian will add the article. Particularly when talking about concepts, or abstract things. Love, war, peace, all of these in Hungarian take the definite article: a szerelem, a háború, a béke. So while “the war” in english would refer to a specific war, in Hungarian it means war in general. However, this is only done in the nominative. In the accusative, szerelmet, háborút, békét, can stand by themselves and a sign saying “békét” would be understood to be a plea for peace.

Indefinite article

The indefinite article (a, an) in Hungarian is egy which is the word for “one” and is one of the few irregularly pronounced words. Despite being written with only one gy it is always pronounced with ggy. It is used pretty much the same way as it is in English and in the same places.
