Adding New Languages
This is if you want to add new pages for a language we don't yet have
Theres a few things you need to do BEFORE creating pages.
- Create an information page. This will be placed at /Language (for example Turkish).
- Fill out that page. Use another information page as a template
- Create the category for the language
- Create the page template for the language. (for example Template:HindiPages for Hindi). Use another language's one for an sample.
- Add the LanguagePages template to the Index page in alphabetical order.
- After this you can start Creating New Pages.
- Add a request to the Requests page to have the language added to the main page.
Creating New Pages
This is for existing languages
- Choose what page you want to create or submit
- Fill out the create a page form on the main page. Make sure to use the naming conventions listed below.
- Use the Info box template first
- Fill out your page, using the templates to help you. Don't just plonk data on the page.
- Add necessary categories. You need to add one for the language, one for the type of content and any other needed ones.
- Add the necessary pages template. This is for example, when using French, FrenchPages
- Preview the page first, if it looks okay, submit.
- Edit the pages template (eg. Template:FrenchPages for French) to include the new page. Please use alphabetical order.
List of Categories
The categories you can use range from the name of the language (like for example) to the categories like . A list of categories of this nature can be found on the main page under the heading "By Type". There is also two other categories you can use, if the page needs to be checked over, and if it is incomplete.
Naming Conventions
| Adjectives | Describes how adjectives decline in CASE, NUMBER, DEFINITENESS and of course in its DEGREE. LOTS of examples please. |
|---|---|
| Articles | Describes DEFINITENESS. Nothing more, nothing less. |
| Auxiliaries | Describes auxiliary verbs. Should not include the initial conjugation of the verb. LOTS of examples please. |
| Cases | This page will describe the nominal case systems of the language. Nothing more. Please provide at least 3 examples for each point made if possibly. |
| Dialects | An overview of the difference in Dialects. |
| Gender | Describes what GENDERS a language has, how they are identified and what the basic differences in declension is (they should be described more on the respective pages like articles etc) |
| Introduction | A basic introduction to the language. Including basic history, linguistic overview, setting and number of speakers. Plus outline any sociolinguistic or political problems regarding the language. The language itself should not be taught on this page. |
| Modal verbs | same as auxiliaries |
| Numbers | a numbers page should outline how to count at least 0-10, 11-20, 30, 40, 50 etc. It should also include an overview of the ORDINAL and CARDINAL numbers |
| Particles | Describes how one uses PARTICLES. Again, lots of examples here please. |
| Plurality | This page should describe how the language deals with plurality, duality etc, or lack of. |
| Prefixes | Same as suffixes. |
| Pronouns | It seems we love these pages. Please include: PERSONAL PRONOUNS (in all cases necessary), INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS, POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS, DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS and RELATIVE PRONOUNS. please also include examples of how they are used if possible. |
| Sounds and Writing | Lists the SOUNDS/PHONOLOGY of the language, INCLUDING VOWEL HARMONY, ALLOPHONY, and CONSONANT GRADATION. Also includes the ALPHABET/ORTHOGRAPHY of the language. Languages with multiple scripts (Like Japanese perhaps) can have a page named after each script instead. The usage of the script mentioned needs to be specific to the language. (This is the merger of Sounds and Orthography pages) |
| Suffixes | Only describes suffixes to either verbs (which are NOT conjugative) or nouns (which are NOT case marking) |
| Tones | For pages regarding tones of a language. Can be separate to the Sounds and Writing page. |
| Verbs | This page is for the explanations of verbal conjugation. Please be sure to include a table of verbs which show an example of each type of conjugation class mentioned if necessary. |
| Vocab | NOT vocabulary. List of vocab differences within the language, or within related languages. up to you. |
Of course this list is not exhaustive so if the page you want to create is language specific, or does not exist here, just create it anyway. A moderator will move it if needs be.

Translating Content
WikiLang is now interested in translating some of its pages into other locales. If you can, this would be greatly appreciated.
Naming Rules
When naming your pages, you need to use a structure like this. CODE:Language:Page name. For example, to create a page in Swedish (sv) about Estonian (Estniska) verbs (Verb), you would name your page SV:Estniska:Verb. Please note you will not be able to use the create a page form at this stage.
- English pages do not have a language prefix
- If you are confused about which code you should use, please contact me.
Content Rules
The rules to follow when creating contents.
- Try to keep the English content up to date with the new locale.
- Please abide by the rules of the Creating Content as per on this page.
- Still make sure to use the requests page to ensure your page will be indexed.
- Indexes will go on translated main pages. (For example, Swedish pages will be indexed at: "SV:Main Page")
- As the moderators may not understand if there is any questionable content, we are relying on you to be trustworthy enough to refrain from posting offensive content.
- Remember the rules about marking what needs checking :)
Linking Pages
New Link for New Translations
We now have a system to link pages. Please follow these instructions very carefully. For any troubles, contact me.
For this explanation, we will use the localisation of Maori:Verbs for an example.
- Create a template for the translation links - Each page will have their own.
- The Maori:Verbs page is called Template:Translation-Maori:Verbs
- Use the following format to format the pages
→ English , Svenska , NativeNameOfLanguage , ...
These links need to be in their native names of the languages, as well as in alphabetical order.
- Next, place the template on the absolute first line of the page. This means before the info boxes too!
- So for example:

- Next, place the same template information on EVERY translation of the page (if not already).
- Check all the links work.
New Translation
- Edit the template as mentioned above
- Make sure to Include the new language in the list, in alphabetical order, by native name of the language.
- Add the template to the new page
- Check all the links work.
Categorising
For categorising
- Please use the same categories as the English pages.
