An Introduction to the Language
Greek is a language of great antiquity. It has been around in various forms since at least the 3rd century B.C. and probably even much longer than that. It is one of the oldest recorded living languages and has great historical significance. It was the language of the great philosophers of the past such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Roots from Greek and Latin words form the foundation of modern English and many other Indo-European languages. Its writing system, inspired by that of the ancient Phoenicians gave rise either directly or indirectly to some of the most commonly used writing systems of the world today. This includes Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet that this is written in. Like other Indo-European languages, it is an inflecting language with genders and a small set of widely used cases.
