French verbs, like the verbs in other Romance languages, form their various tenses by attaching personal endings to specific root sets that are used for specific things, such as participles and infinitives.

Normal Verbs

There are three main verb endings in French.

  • er verbs
  • ir verbs
  • re verbs

Each of these three types form conjugations their own ways so an example will be given for each verb type.

er verbs

Infinitive: Donner

Present Participle: Donnant

Past Participle: Donné

Auxiliary Verbs

These are verbs that are used in conjunction with other verbs to convey a deeper meaning, such as the perfective aspect.

Avoir - to have

This verb can mean either to physically have something or it can be used as an auxiliary to form such things as the perfective aspect.

Past Participle:Eu

Être - to be

This verb is used both as a copula (a verb that equates one item to another in some way) and in constructions involving a state.

Infinitive: Être

Present Participle: Étant

Past Participle: Été
