An Introduction to the Language
History
Dutch is part of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family. It is relatively closely related to West Frisian, German and English, and to a lesser extent, the North Germanic languages (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, and Faroese). Being the language from which Afrikaans derived, Dutch is mutually intelligible with that language.
