An Introduction to the Language
Coptic represents the latest stage of the Egyptian language of antiquity. After the 1st century a.d. it was written with an old version of the lunate Greek alphabet with a number of stylized Demotic letters added onto it. It is still used today as a liturgical language by the Coptic Church of Alexandria. Revitalization efforts have been in the works to bring the language back into use.
