Prepositions (Arabic: حروف الجرḥurūfu l-jarri) are particles that help to define various meanings involving movement, location, or sometimes are used by verbs as syntactic devices.

Prepositions change the case of a noun or verb to the genitive and are divided into various sets.

Primary prepositions: لـ li..., بـ bi..., كـ ka..., من min, منذ munḏu, على ‘alā, عن ‘an, في fī, مع ma‘a, إلى ’ilā, حتى ḥattā. These prepositions have the common characteristic of being underived. Li..., bi..., and ka... are attached to the noun.

Secondary prepositions: ضد ḍidda, عند ‘inda, بعد ba‘da, بين bayna, دون dūna, بدون bi-dūni, فوق fawqa, حول ḥawla, لدى ladā, تحت taḥta, قبل qabla, وراء warā’a, أمام ’amāma. These prepositions have the common characteristic of being derived from verbs.
