An Introduction to the Language
History
Arabic is one of the worlds largest languages in terms of speakers, and also of the area it's spoken in. There are many regional dialects, many of which are not mutually intelligible. However, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is taught in schools, and used for university, work, media, and government in all Arabic speaking nations.
MSA is derived from Classical Arabic, the liturgical language of Islam. Arabic has lent words to many other languages, mainly in the Middle East and Africa, but also to European languages, particularly in the Mediterranean area, due to its proximity with Arabic Civilization, and the years of Arab rule in the Iberian Peninsula.
